Chances are, your Suzuki Samurai gas guage has not been working for a while now. We know what you are doing. You reset the trip odometer and just know how many miles you can drive before needing gas. This works fine until your kid thinks "I wonder what pressing this botton will do?".
Most of the time, the problem is the fuel sending unit in your gas tank. Suzuki wants $40 for this part. We've got the complete assembly (including new gasket) for under $25.
It's time you fixed this problem. Get your gas guage working like it should and use your trip odomenter for something else (like, say, umm....keeping tract of milage used on your trip?)
